Gideon Appah was born in Accra, Ghana in 1989. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana in 2012.
Gideon’s work draws on universal subjects or culture. His work embodies contemporary obsession on sexual culture, life, glamour, anxiety, pop culture, race, sentiments and death which evoke the low culture of the urban life of humanity in his country and beyond. His often dissonance style of work questions contemporary aesthetics and incorporates all these marks: dripping, splashes of color, stenciling, scratching, collages, images, texts and figures which make reference to the history of painting.
